Newcastle University Safety Office

Contractors Safety Policy information

Below is a Code of Practice for Contractors which tells them what safety controls are expected. There is also a Guide for Schools on how to manage the safety aspects of engaging contractors.

It is essential that all schools note that any work undertaken by a contractor on the fabric of any building must be agreed or arranged via Estates so that safety information such as asbestos reports and permits to work etc. is exchanged. Please contact Estates Customer Services on ext 7171 if you have any queries about this.

There are a number of contractors listed in the guidance section of this website who's safety paperwork has already been vetted. These include catering contractors and waste contractors and also a couple of portable appliance testing companies.

There is a further Contractors Guidance page on this site, which includes lists and links to lists of restricted contractors for various issues..

This issue is currently undergoing considerable change and the Estate Support Service is leading a more distributed approach to the management of some contractors on site under limited conditions. Although the documents below (from 2005) are provided they are no longer the latest state and guidance should be sought from the University Estate Support Service.
